Leader – Julie - Distance Araucaria Track 5.2k and Thylogale Track 10.0k
Walkers – Steve, Wendy, John, Paul, Colin, Christine, Mary, Jackie, Margaret, Ron, Joy and Julie

2015-04-11 D'Aguilar National Park_149We started our walk from Walkabout Creek (D'Aguilar National Park Headquarters) and did the Araucaria Track which is supposed to be about 5 km but there are conflicting signs and information in books and brochures so I'm not really sure of the exact distance.

It was lovely walking near the water and seeing all of the water lillies. Quite a few people go there to paddle their canoes/kayaks. We were going to have our morning tea sitting on the grass overlooking the Enoggera Reservoir but decided to drive onto Jolly's Lookout as such a lovely view there and a more suitable place to sit. We all enjoyed the cake brought by Jackie as we sat and looked at the view and chatted away.

Report

Mary left us here and then we left our cars parked at Jolly's Lookout and the rest of us walked the Thylogale Track, which is 8 km return. It is a really nice flat track and quite shady so we all now knew that our return trip would be nice and easy. I hadn't done it for a few years and so couldn't remember if it would be uphill on our return trip.

No one believes me anymore when I say it's a flat track with no stairs anyway so it was a lovely surprise to find out that it really was a flat track and not steep or uphill. On our walk we saw heaps and heaps of students and we found out that they were from the University of Queensland doing a field trip. There were 2 large white buses back at the entrance to the walk. The sign said "First Year Ecology Field Course from 8th April to 19th April" and that that was the reason for all of the little pink and orange flagging tapes that we saw on quite a few plants along the track.

We had lunch in the Boombana picnic area where we saw a couple of Yellow Breasted Robins flitting around. Was hard to get good photos as they were so quick but I did manage to get a couple. On our walk we heard whipbirds and bellbirds and a few other calls.

Some of us decided to do the Pitta Circuit while the others started to walk back up the Thylogale Track. I'm so glad that we did do it as it was a really lovely little circuit and so I will definitely include it again if we walk in this area again next year. A nice shady walk back up the same track to our cars. We walked past the Egernia Circuit (which is only 1.5 km) and said that we would like to do it next time we come.

We then we drove to the Cafe down the road at Boombana and enjoyed our refreshments out on the balcony. We were very lucky that they still served us as sign on the door said 3pm closed and we had just arrived at 3 pm. No food available, just our drinks but we were all happy with that anyway. The milkshakes were excellent and the best that I've tasted for a long time. They were all so full and mine nearly spilt over the top so at $7.50 each they were expensive but great and went down well after our pleasant day of walking and talking - Julie.

Why does attentiveness to nature matter? In a very fundamental sense, we are what we pay attention to. Paying heed to beauty, grace, and everyday miracles promotes a sense of possibility and coherence that runs deeper and truer than the often illusory commercial, social "realities" advanced by mainstream contemporary culture. ... Our attention is precious, and what we choose to focus it on has enormous consequences. What we choose to look at, and to listen to--these choices change the world. As Thich Nhat Hanh has pointed out, we become the bad television programs that we watch. A society that expends its energies tracking the latest doings of the celebrity couple is fundamentally distinct from one that watches for the first arriving spring migrant birds, or takes a weekend to check out insects in a mountain stream, or looks inside flowers to admire the marvelous ingenuities involved in pollination. The former tends to drag culture down to its lowest commonalities; the latter can lift us up in a sense of unity with all life.
