Ivor is well on the mend after his hip operation and should be back in action after 4 to 6 weeks recuperation. His stay in hospital did not stop him from observing the local birds, female Koel and Grey Butcherbird to name a few. Another welcome site was to have Harry along to the meeting.  He is participating in activities already and is looking great. 

Pat showed us images of waders, some in breeding plumage, from a day out she had at the Port of Brisbane, Lytton Roost and Thornside taken with her new Cannon digital camera. Looking forward to more great shots from you Pat.

John and Jill had a wonderful trip to North Qld last year and showed us many of the spectacular birds of the tropics and Atherton Tableland. John’s patience resulted in capturing the full courting display and mating of a pair of Victoria’s Riflebirds. Other birds shown were Tooth-billed and Great Bowerbirds, Paradise Kingfisher, Grey-headed Robin, Pied Monach, Orange-footed Scrubfowl, Rufous-throated Honeyeater, Southern Cassowary, Blue-winged Kookaburra. In all, 86 images were shown. 

The evening was so packed with watching and discussing the birds on the screen that there was no time for the usual bird yarns. But there is always next month.

At our February Meeting, the first for the year, members were keen to share their bird yarns - Sacred Kingfishers, Noisy Friarbirds, Blue-faced and Lewin’s Honeyeaters successfully breeding in gardens, sightings of White-headed Pigeons, Red-browed Finches and Superb Fairy-wrens and a flock of 30 Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoos were seen flying over at Guanaba Road.

One member saw two White-eared Monachs in acacias near Palm Grove N.P. One was also seen in Kaiser Road in December last year. A pair of Eastern Whipbirds have claimed a territory in our garden. The male calls with such energy and punch he nearly falls off his perch. This behaviour has continued since September last year but no sign of any breeding yet.
